The daily farm walk is the best part of the day. Every day after dinner we go out on a romantic walk around the farm as a family. During Winter we sure missed this time together, because after the table was cleaned up the sun had gone down. Aren’t we all so grateful that Spring is here and the days are becoming longer again? The smell of orange blossoms outside with a nice cool breeze and no need for a jacket. The kids are barefoot running around with bikes and toy dump trucks. The grass is growing and the trees are waking up. This is the ideal time of year for nature walks!
Here are a few reasons why I love our daily farm walk.
Holding hands with my kiddos. This gives us a great opportunity to bond. No technology or dirty dishes getting in the way. We end up having great conversations during our walks. We might collect eggs and watch the lambs, but there is no rush. In the morning when I am outside I have chores to take care of. I am usually carrying buckets, feed bags, hay, or walking our dairy goat to/from the stand. In the evening I am usually outside for the sole purpose of being outside, not running around doing chores. Sometimes all 5 of us hold hands in a long line, the kids think this is extra special. Speaking all 5 Love Languages, you know.
Checking on the Pasture Grass
While we are on our casual stroll we stop to check on the grass. Who knew grass could make someone so happy? We take our time to identify different plant varieties. Snapdragons, and baby’s breath that we tossed in the fields last year are popping up again this year, and it’s always fun when someone spotted a new flower. Checking the grass height is important for pasture rotation to see if it is time to move the animals or not. We also check on the trees, to see if any of the younger ones need some water. We might also talk about what projects need to become a priority, like mowing some spring weeds before they take over the yard.
Relaxing and watching the sunset over the mountains, and the clouds turn pink. We have also spent quite a bit of time watching the moon rise and learning about the moon cycles. My kids love to know the different full moon names. The owls are starting to become more active, and we love to watch them swoop out of their nest each night.
Daily Farm Walk
Let’s not forget about the fresh air that we all need! If you need an excuse, there you go. Go outside and soak up the fresh air, and spend some time outside with your family.
